History and origins
An old German breed (Zwergpinscher) developed centuries ago to hunt rats in houses and stables. It is not a miniaturized Doberman but a separate, older breed, probably descended from the German Pinscher with some Dachshund and Italian Greyhound blood.
Health
Life expectancy is 12 to 16 years, and the breed is hardy. The most common health problems in the breed:
- Patellar luxation
- Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
- Progressive retinal atrophy
- Hypothyroidism
- Mucopolysaccharidosis type VI
Choose a breeder who has the parents health-screened for this breed, and ask to see the results.
Coat and care
Short, smooth coat. Low shedding, minimal coat care.
