Overview
A medium-sized scent hound, well built and fast, the Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie has a short, close coat in tricolor, white and black, or white and orange. Keen, tireless and blessed with a fine voice, it hunts hare, rabbit, roe deer or fox, in a pack or in a small group. Sociable and easy to keep in a kennel, it remains a pack dog made for hunting, and is rarely kept as a companion.
History and origins
The breed was created in France by crossing medium-sized French scent hounds, such as the Poitevin or the Porcelaine, with English Harrier-type hounds, to produce a lighter, livelier dog suited to hunting small game with hounds (petite vénerie). It is used both in hare or rabbit packs and for hunting with guns. Its FCI standard (no. 325) dates from 1983. In France, it remains well established among hunters, with about 150 LOF registrations in 2025.
