Overview
A light, elegant and refined scent hound with a white coat clearly marked with black, the Ariégeois is a valuable helper on difficult ground, hunting alone or in a pack. A hare specialist that flushes its quarry with plenty of initiative, it also hunts roe deer and wild boar; cheerful and sociable, it takes direction easily for a scent hound.
History and origins
Originally from Ariège, it comes from crossing the local briquet hounds with a large pack hound, the Bleu de Gascogne or the Gascon Saintongeois, keeping that type in a smaller, lighter frame. Its standard was set in the early 20th century, and the breed is recognized by the FCI (standard no. 20). It remains a hunters’ dog, with just over 200 LOF registrations in 2025.
Health
Life expectancy is 12 to 14 years, and the breed is hardy. The most common health problems in the breed:
- Ear infections (long ears)
- Hip dysplasia
- Ectropion
- Grass awns and hunting injuries
Choose a breeder who has the parents health-screened for this breed, and ask to see the results.
Coat and care
Short, smooth coat. Moderate shedding, minimal coat care. Coat colors: white with clearly defined jet-black patches, sometimes ticked, pale tan markings on the cheeks and above the eyes.
