Overview
A medium-sized scent hound, muscular and heavy-boned, with a massive but not heavy head and a fawn-brown coat with a black mantle or saddle, the Bruno Saint-Hubert Français gives an impression of power and nobility. Lively, tenacious and brave, yet gentle and very attached to its owner, it hunts alone or in a pack on any terrain and is especially effective on wild boar and at blood tracking.
History and origins
It has much in common with the old Bruno du Jura of the Saint-Hubert type, the heaviest form of the Swiss hounds, a type now abandoned in Switzerland. French breeders, brought together in the Club français des Brunos et des chiens courants suisses, carried on their own breeding program, suited to the needs of today’s hunters. The Société Centrale Canine (French Kennel Club) recognized it in 2003 as a French breed (SCC standard no. 905, group 6), but the FCI has not recognized it so far. Its numbers remain modest, with 159 dogs registered with the French Kennel Club (LOF) in 2025.
Health
Life expectancy is 11 to 13 years, and the breed is hardy. The most common health problems in the breed:
- Ear infections
- Hip dysplasia
- Entropion and ectropion
- Hunting injuries (wild boar)
Choose a breeder who has the parents health-screened for this breed, and ask to see the results.
Coat and care
Short, smooth coat. Moderate shedding, minimal coat care. Coat colors: fawn brown with black mantle, fawn brown with black saddle, with or without spots above the eyes (“four-eyed”).
